Hansel's Bakery + Café is a bakery based in New York City's Washington Square Park that offers a variety of baked goods. Customers have a range of choices from savory to sweet, making it an ideal location for the diverse tastes of the New York crowd.
Inspiration + early development
The dashed lines between the letters reference to the trail of breadcrumbs that Hansel in Hansel and Gretel left behind in the forest.
Metaphorically, customers can “create their own trail of breadcrumbs,” or promote the bakery as a result of their enjoyment from trying the bakery, that others could “follow” to discover the bakery and try out the bread themselves.
Bread and beverages hand-drawn and then vectorized
Sacred geometry
All the bread illustrations are within a sacred geometric shape. Sacred geometry has been studied to be present in all natural things, even at an atomic level; it is a part of our daily lives. Similarly, for many of us, bread is so ingrained in our lives, and both sacred geometry and bread have religious importance. Combining bread with sacred geometry made an interesting comparison as well as a deviation from the typical bakery aesthetic.
Beverage packaging
Following the bakery’s branding that emphasizes variety, I created a series of promotional advertisements for customers to have something new each time they received an item or to be able to have numerous options to choose favorites.
The brown kraft-paper-like appearance of the keychain tags is reminiscent of bread. Graphics and text are engraved into the chipboard material of the tags to add a unique and interesting visual quality.
The same kraft-paper-like appearance of the keychain tags is reflected on the business cards as well.
The promotional postcards display familiar graphics and a quote by Oprah Winfrey. These postcards could be collected by customers for appreciation, or they could be mailed and further promote the bakery.
